About British Army Esports
What Is British Army Esports
British Army Esports is the Army's competitive gaming programme. Players from across every Corps and Regiment train and compete under its banner, representing their unit and the wider Army in games from Call of Duty to Rocket League.
Squads form at unit and Corps level and build up through the season toward national and international fixtures, including the C.O.D.E. Bowl and the International Defence Esports Games. It sits alongside the Army's established sports as another way for personnel to compete, represent, and belong.
Why Esports in the Army
Recruitment & Engagement
Esports reaches digital-native talent that traditional sport doesn’t always reach, giving more people a genuine route in.
Skills That Transfer
Decision-making under pressure, situational awareness, rapid reaction, coordination under stress. It builds the cognitive side of what sport builds physically.
Inclusion
Esports doesn’t require the physical fitness standards that gate most Army sport. Injured personnel, those on medical downgrade, and others can still compete, represent, and belong through a genuinely complementary pathway.
Retention & Cohesion
It builds the same unit cohesion and team identity that sport does, through a different medium, often at lower physical and logistical cost.
Digital & Cyber-Adjacent Skills
A genuine skills and education pathway covering reaction time, systems thinking, and communication under load. These carry a plausible adjacency into digitally-loaded trades.
Legitimacy
Esports is formally recognised at governmental and Olympic-adjacent levels, through bodies like the Global Esports Federation and the Commonwealth Esports Championships. The Army is taking part in a competitive discipline that already has that standing, not one it has to build from scratch.
Responsible play: esports comes with the same real considerations as any screen-based activity: regular breaks, good ergonomics, and healthy play limits. That's taken seriously here.
Governance & Wider Ecosystem
Esports sits under Army Sport governance, itself part of UK Armed Forces Sport. British Army Esports also sits alongside sister-service esports programmes and the UK's national esports body.
Individual Corps make up British Army Esports itself, sitting outside this reporting structure. See the Corps directory.
